Head, Department of Management and Accounting

Welcome to The Department of Management and Accounting. The department has been a leading provider of accounting education and research in Nigeria as well as in other Africa region. We strive to accomplish excellence in professional education and research in the mainstream areas of accounting and related disciplines. As a constituent department of the College of Business, we are an integral part of the first business school in the African region to be triple accredited by NUC, ICAN and CIBN. The Department is one of the youngest and most energetic powerhouses of accounting education and research in Nigeria and the Asian-Pacific region. We have maintained close relationships with the Nigeria accounting profession, for example, by regularly providing consultancy and staff training services to Big 4 accounting firms in Nigeria.

Our undergraduate program is among the most popular accounting programs in Nigeria. We aim to provide our students with wide exposures to the global business environment and to nurture their ability to adapt to rapidly changing industry demands: to this end, over 50% of our students undertake at least one of our major developmental programs such as international student exchanges, overseas immersions, study tours or local and international internships during their university lives.

The Department has established a strong research team with a well balanced combination of senior and junior researchers. In an attempt to maintain an international research network and to boost research collaborations with overseas universities, the Department has regularly invited internationally renowned scholars. We are regularly offering faculty research workshops to accounting researchers and doctoral students which are open to all researchers in the Nigeria academic research community. We also maintain internal research workshops called Brown-Bag that are open to our own faculty and doctoral students. As part of the Department’s research initiative, we are publishing two academic journals:

Management has been described as a practice where art, science, and craft meet. It is management that takes the assets of a firm (its products, its services, its people) and combines them in a way that achieves lasting success. Because there is an art to it, effective management is something that a firm’s competitors find difficult to imitate.

Undergraduate and masters students can learn the craft and science of management in a number of different areas. Strategic management focuses on the decisions that top management can make to increase profitability. Organizational behavior focuses on what leaders can do to improve motivation and performance. Operations management focuses on improving the processes used to produce goods and services. Students with Management majors, concentrations, or certificates can leverage those skills in industry, management consulting, and entrepreneurial careers.

PhD students are trained to contribute to the science of management. The department’s faculty are among the most productive in the country and include current and former editors of several top journals. The faculty study a wide variety of topics and encourage students to carve out their own unique research identities.

MANAGEMENT IN THE ACADEMICS

Management Information Systems (MIS) is a hands-on major which equips students with real-world skills that are in demand in the job market. Our program prepares students to lead IT-enabled change in organizations. The Department of Management and Accounting provides the foundation for students to go in a technical direction (such as a programmer or database administrator), a non-technical direction (such as a business process analyst or project manager), or somewhere in the middle (such as a business intelligence or IT risk & security specialist).
